Candle sand in a clear glass cube, a green glass cylinder and a dark ceramic bowl.

Which containers are suitable for candle sand?

Candle sand needs a non-flammable, heat-resistant, stable container suitable for candles. Appearance alone does not establish suitability. A thick wall or heavy base is not proof of heat resistance either.

The right container changes the effect: clear glass shows the fine grains, coloured glass alters the light and simple ceramics suit a calm interior.

Glass: suitable for candles and undamaged

Choose a designated candle glass or a container whose manufacturer confirms that use. A drinking glass, preserving jar or decorative vase is not automatically suitable simply because it is glass. Check the rim, base and sides for cracks or chips before every use.

Our accessories range includes round candle glasses and glass cubes. Check the actual internal dimensions and each container's instructions when choosing.

Ceramics: not every bowl is designed for candles

Intended use matters with ceramics too. Choose an intact container suitable for candles. Porous, cracked or decoratively coated objects of unknown suitability are not reliable choices. Holding hot drinks does not automatically mean a container is approved for an open flame.

Shape and opening affect use

A wide, stable base helps prevent tipping. An open enough shape lets you position the wick upright and away from the walls. Avoid narrow necks, strong tapering and improvised covers. The flame must not touch the rim or decorations.

Multiple wicks increase heat exposure. Do not decide their number or spacing from a decorative photograph. Follow the container and product instructions. If unsure, choose a simpler arrangement or ask us via Contact.

Keep these materials away from flames

Wooden bowls, plastic containers and paper cups are unsuitable candle containers. Dried flowers, paper, ribbons and loose decorations must not go in the sand or above the flame. External decorations need enough space and must not be able to fall in.

A quick check before filling

  1. Is the container demonstrably suitable for candles, non-flammable and heat-resistant?
  2. Are its base, walls and rim intact?
  3. Does it stand securely on a level, heat-resistant surface?
  4. Can the wick stand upright with enough distance from the walls?
  5. Are children, pets, draughts and flammable objects kept away?

Can I reuse an old candle glass?

A suitable, undamaged glass may be reused. Remove all wax and other residue and let it dry first. Our article How to clean and reuse a candle glass explains preparation.

If unsure about suitability, use the container as decoration without a flame. Choose a suitable candle glass for burning. Before lighting, read the Kivaro safety instructions.
