Many scented candles come in beautiful glasses. Once the candle is finished, wax residue, a wick tab and traces of adhesive often remain. Throwing it away would be a shame. With patience, a suitable glass can be cleaned and reused.
Turning it back into a candle is especially easy with candle sand. There is no need to melt wax or pour a new candle. Fill the clean, heat-resistant glass, insert a suitable wick and enjoy its light again.
Check the glass first
Not every decorative drinking glass is suitable as a candle container. Use only glasses originally intended for candles or explicitly marked heat-resistant. Check the rim, base and sides carefully. A glass with a crack, chip or hairline fracture must not be used near a flame.
Let wax residue cool completely
Wait until the wax is fully cold and solid. Small remnants in a traditional container candle can often be loosened after a few hours in the freezer, as wax contracts slightly in the cold. Carefully lift out the solid piece with a blunt wooden or plastic tool. Sharp knives can cause injury and damage the glass.
The gentle warm-water method
If cooling is not enough, place the closed glass in a bowl of warm, not boiling, water, keeping the water outside the glass. The warmth softens the wax so you can remove it with kitchen paper. Avoid sudden temperature changes, which can crack glass. Never put liquid wax or wax residue down the drain.
Remove the wick tab and adhesive
The metal wick tab often comes out with the wax. If it remains stuck, gently warm the base from outside with warm water and lift it carefully. Depending on the adhesive, labels may come off in warm soapy water. Treat stubborn residue with a little cooking oil, then remove it thoroughly with washing-up liquid.
Clean the glass thoroughly
Wash the empty glass with warm water and washing-up liquid. Remove all oil, adhesive and wax residue. Dry it completely and check again for damage before reusing.
Dispose of wax residue correctly
Small, cooled wax remnants belong in household waste, not the sink or toilet. Liquid wax can harden in pipes and cause build-up. If the wax is clean and you know its type, save it for another craft project. Do not use unknown scented wax for cosmetics, food or other unintended purposes.
Turn the old glass into a new candle
- Place the clean, undamaged candle glass on a stable, heat-resistant base.
- Pour in the candle sand so the container stands securely and the wick has enough distance from the edge.
- Insert a suitable wick upright in the sand. With Kivaro, leave about one centimetre visible.
- Gently level the surface without pressing the sand down.
- Light the candle only under supervision and let the glass cool completely before moving it.

- Store paper clips, jewellery or other small, dry items.
- Use as a mini vase for single flowers or short branches.
- Hold make-up brushes or pens.
- Plant a small succulent with suitable drainage.
- Create a seasonal display with stones, shells or other non-flammable materials, provided the glass is not also being used as a candle.
When the glass should no longer be used for candles
A beautiful glass may still be useful for storage even when unsuitable for a flame. This applies to unknown heat resistance, very thin glass, an uneven base or visible damage.
