Burn candles properly with seven care tips

A tall, flickering flame, visible soot or uneven burning is not always caused by the wax. Wick length, draughts, location and handling after extinguishing often affect how a candle burns.

These tips apply to traditional container candles and candle sand. Always follow the manufacturer's specific instructions first. Kivaro also has a dedicated safety article.

Check the wick before lighting

A wick that is too long can create a large, unsteady flame and visible soot. Traditional container candle wicks are often trimmed to around six millimetres. For Kivaro candle sand, the instructions specify about one centimetre above the surface. Remove charred wick remnants only once everything has cooled completely. Suitable replacement wicks and wick trimmers are available in our accessories range.

Insert the wick upright

With candle sand , the wick should stand upright and far enough from the container rim . A leaning wick can heat one side of the glass. Push it into the sand far enough to stay stable without leaving too much above the surface.

Avoid draughts

Open windows, fans and ventilation outlets make flames flicker, which can cause uneven burning and more soot. Choose a sheltered spot on a level, heat-resistant surface. Air the room before or after use instead of putting the burning candle directly in a draught.

Avoid moving the candle

Once liquid wax forms around the wick, leave the container in place. Moving it can spill hot wax and shift the wick. This also applies to candle sand: the melted wax around the wick must become fully solid before removal or restyling.

Match burning time to the container and room

A candle need not burn for hours to create atmosphere. Watch the flame, container and scent intensity. A shorter session may be enough in a small room. If the glass becomes very warm or the flame changes noticeably, extinguish it and let it cool. For traditional scented candles, follow the manufacturer's maximum burning time.

Leave space between candles

Nearby flames heat one another. Do not place candle glasses directly against each other. Adequate spacing improves airflow and avoids excessive heating. Keep decorations, textiles and branches well away from flames.

Extinguish the flame carefully

Use a candle snuffer or blow gently. Never use water: it can splash hot wax and damage glass through sudden temperature change. Check that the wick is fully extinguished and do not touch the container until cool.

Refresh candle sand after burning

  1. Let the wax, wick and container cool completely.
  2. Lift out the solid wax disc with the spent wick.
  3. Remove dark wick remnants and other impurities.
  4. Level the clean, unmelted candle sand.
  5. For next use, insert a new suitable wick .

Remove wick remnants from the surface

Small charred particles may fall onto the candle sand during extinguishing. Remove them after everything has cooled and before inserting a new wick. A clean surface looks neater and keeps loose remnants away from the next flame.

Take warning signs seriously

Extinguish the candle if the flame becomes unusually tall, flickers strongly or produces noticeable soot. Once cool, check the wick, container and location. Do not reuse damaged glass. If unsure, consult the Kivaro usage instructions and detailed safety article.

A little care makes a visible difference

Candle care takes just minutes. A suitable wick, sheltered spot and complete cooling help keep burning more controlled. With candle sand , there is another benefit: you can refresh the surface after use and prepare it again with a new wick.
