Three containers of different sizes with fine white candle sand and lit wicks.

How much candle sand do I need for my glass?

The amount depends on the internal volume up to your desired fill height. Measure the inside of your container, not the height of its outer wall. For an initial estimate, the Kivaro calculator uses around 500 g per litre. This is a planning guide, not an exact measured density for every variant.

You need three measurements

  • Internal size: for a straight, round glass, measure the inside diameter.
  • Fill height: measure only the area you actually want to fill with sand.
  • Quantity: for several equal-sized containers, multiply the amount for one.

A container that is 9 cm tall outside is not automatically filled to 9 cm. Allow for the base, distance from the rim and safe wick position. Use only suitable, non-flammable, heat-resistant containers.

Calculate for a round glass

For a straight cylinder: volume in ml = 3.14 × radius × radius × fill height. Use centimetres for all measurements. The radius is half the inside diameter. Multiply the volume by 0.5 for an approximate weight in grams.

Inside diameter Fill height Estimated amount
6 cm 5 cm approx. 71 g
8 cm 5 cm approx. 126 g
10 cm 5 cm approx. 196 g

These examples explain the calculation, not recommended container sizes or fill heights. Use the calculator on the product page for your own measurements.

How many 300 g bags do I need?

Divide the estimated total by 300 and round up to whole bags. Three glasses needing about 126 g each total roughly 378 g, so plan for two 300 g bags. Seal the remaining sand for later.

For different containers, calculate each separately and add the results. Repeating container sizes make buying and preparing a larger table display easier.

What about rectangular or curved containers?

For a rectangular container, calculate inside length × inside width × fill height. A simple cylinder calculation is less accurate for sloping or rounded walls. On the first fill, weigh the amount used with kitchen scales to get a useful figure for identical containers. Always measure and fill before lighting.

Common questions about quantities

Does more sand automatically mean a bigger flame?

No. The flame depends partly on the correct wick and its position. More sand is no reason to leave more wick above the surface.

Must I replace everything after each use?

No. Once completely cool, remove the solid wax section and spent wick. Clean, unmelted sand can be reused.
